Designer Highlight: JoMarie Jewelry / Win a Pair of Earrings! $50 Value!

I always find it inspirational when people can both make and stick to their New Year’s Resolutions. Whether it’s learning French, toning up, or deciding to get back into the dating world, a new year is the opportune time to change your life. But is it a time to completely alter your life and follow your passions? Jodie Vieira from JoMarie Jewelry thinks so!
JoMarie Jewelry designer Jodie Vieira

Vieira possesses degrees in both Accounting and Business Administration, but was apprehensive about following an arts and design-related career. Although she admits she followed the sensible career path in accounting, the art classes she took in college “were hands down my favorite.” Vieira says it took her a while to find her creative medium and the confidence to change her life. So, on New Year’s Eve, Vieira spent her last day working as an Accountant for a prestigious Fortune 500 Company to pursue her creative dream as a jewelry designer. The designer admits it was a “tough decision” to quit her job, and a decision she had to think about long and hard. Ultimately, she wasn’t happy in the world of accounting and wanted a career in which she could express her creative side. Vieira discussed the decision with her husband and they decided “my sanity was more important than a steady paycheck” (most supportive husband ever, right!?!). The designer also knows she is fortunate to be in a position that allows her to follow her dreams. She confesses, “So far it’s been amazing, I now have the time to expand my line, take additional classes to learn new skills, and live a more balanced life.”
The designer began making her creations about seven years ago. She explains that although at first it was a hobby, she began wearing her own pieces and giving them as gifts to both friends and family. During this time, her jewelry making took a back burner to her accounting career, “but my love for it was rekindled a couple of years ago when I began making jewelry for my friends’ weddings.”

Long Dramatic Champagne Pearl Earrings - $37

Vieira says, “JoMarie Jewelry evolved organically from my own personal jewelry needs.  As I made earrings, necklaces, and bracelets to compliment my own wardrobe and wore them out, I found that people really responded well to them.  I was soon taking orders and decided to launch my own line.” JoMarie Jewelry features three collections: Timeless, Rock, and Bliss.
The Timeless collection is “geared towards everyday wear that is effortlessly chic and beautiful” and features necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. The latest Timeless collection, as featured on the designer’s etsy site, boasts an assortment of pearls, shells, corals, and amethyst with color pallets of silver, sweet pink, grape, turquoise, and chartreuse green.   While one pendant necklace will set you back $145, the rest of the line is an affordable $15 to $65 per piece. (Vieira also feels Taylor Swift would be a perfect representative to sport this line because of her classic beauty and elegant style.)

Turquoise and Pearls necklace - $65
Exquisite vintage turquoise is paired with freshwater pearls to create this casual yet classic bohemian style necklace.

The Rock collection features “edgier and more dramatic” pieces, and is “the type of jewelry you wear out on the town when you want to have a good time.” The Rock collection also features earrings, necklaces, and bracelets and ranges from $16 to $55. With a color pallet of pearl white, silver, black, and turquoise, these pieces will be sure to compliment any outfit.

Dramatic Chain Earrings - $24
Several chains form dramatic metallic tassels that hang from a silver plated hand crafted ear hook, finished off with small black crystal squares.

Lastly, the Bliss collection is a wedding line, “classically beautiful but with modern twists.” This collection mostly features pearl earrings, necklaces, and bracelets that would add an elegant touch to any bride’s gown. Jewelry from this line costs $15 to $219. The designer’s most fabulous jewelry moment also came from the Bliss collection, when a friend of Vieira’s wore a pair of pearl earrings on her wedding day. The designer says, “It is a huge honor for a bride to choose to wear one of your designs on the most important day of her life.”
Brooch with Pearls necklace - $195
A statement piece, this stunning bridal necklace is made with over one hundred freshwater pearls that dangle and twist on one side of a Monet brooch offset by simple layered chains on the other side. This beautiful necklace is the perfect balance of vintage style with a modern twist.

The JoMarie Jewelry design aesthetic is simple, effortlessly elegant, and understandably chic. Vieira says women who wear her jewelry are sophisticated and confident, appreciating beauty and art “whether it be in nature, on a canvas, or in the clothes and accessories she wears. She is fresh and modern, and has an overall stylish and chic appeal to her.”

So, where does Vieira find her inspiration? Everything, she says, although most of her inspiration comes directly from the materials she works with. “I can spend hours pouring over beads, stones, and findings; imagining the possibilities.  I believe that to have truly wonderful pieces you must start with quality materials.  I am also inspired when I see a new outfit; I like to imagine what jewelry would make it pop.” Vieira also began working on a new project called 100 Earrings in 100 Days, where, just like it sounds, the designer creates 100 new pair of earrings for 100 days straight. Although challenging, Vieira says it’s important to get out of your comfort zone with designs and even ask for help, if necessary. For example, a recently necklace design was created because a Facebook fan suggested it!

Plum Pom Earrings - $28

The designer plans to continue expanding her line, possibly adding a fourth and bohemian look. She also wants to add rings and cuffs to the merchandise mix, once she sets up silversmithing in her studio.
So, when she’s not making hand-crafted jewelry, where can you find this designer around town? Vieira loves the Germantown streusel at Germantown Café, the truffles at the Cocoa Tree, Friday martini’s at Sambuca, the Arryington Vineyard, and Bicentennial Mall (where her husband proposed). Her two favorite bands are Kings of Leon and Jypsi, and her favorite designers are Vera Wang, Jessica Simpson (shoes), and Michael Kors for his clean and classic silhouettes.
As a final thought, the designer says, “I want people to know how much care, energy, and emotion goes into each one of my pieces.  Not only when I create the design, but every time I fulfill an order.  I pour myself into my jewelry, and I think that shows through in the final product. I even include a handwritten note and piece of chocolate with each order.” Adorable!!

Aéropostale Coming to Green Hills Mall

Yesterday, a student of mine told me she discovered the retailer taking the place of the Hallmark at Green Hills Mall- Aéropostale. Now, I’m not going to lie, that store was my jam in 8th grade. It was sooo Dawson’s Creek and all the cool kids were rockin’ it. I had this terrible green flower printed button-up sweater I’d sport with some ill-fitting jeans, puffy vans, and black bandana. Yes, style and fashion was obviously in my future! Clearly, I graduated from Aéropostale a long time ago, but I always find it surprising how relevant the store still is. (Fun fact: Did you know that Aéropostale originally started out as a private label line available only in Macy’s stores? The brand was so wildly successful it branched out into a separate company.)

According to their website, Aéropostale targets 14 to 17 year-old men and women, offering them a selection of casual apparel and accessories. The specialty retailer “provides customers with a focused selection of high-quality, active-oriented, fashion and fashion basic merchandise at compelling values.” Now, does this description match the customer base of the Green Hills Mall? Not so much.
With the arrivals of Michael Kors, Tory Burch, and Anthropologie Shoes and Accessories, how exactly does Aéropostale fit into that mix? Seems like a fragmented identity to me. A store like Aéropostale would be better suited for a mall like Cool Springs or (come back to us soon) Opry Mills, where the target audience is different. Green Hills Mall caters to an older and more affluent customer; Aéropostale is not this customer.

Who knows? Maybe this store will bring a new customer base to the mall and shock me with their success. We’ll see… But no more bad sweaters for me.

Now, fashion heavy-hitters Michael Kors and Tory Burch will be moving into PB's former location. I'm not sure exactly when MK and TB will be opening, but I know that I look forward to it!

Weekend Update / Event Review: A Touch of Blush

That’s right.. it’s Wednesday night and I’m just now getting to my weekend update. The past week has been sooo catastrophically hectic for me that I’ve literally had to carry around a bottle of Visine in my purse so I don’t end up looking like a cast member of 28 Days Later. (You think I’m joking…) But regardless, I’ve had some fun and not-so-fun happenings this weekend.
Let’s focus on Friday night. I attended the Touch of Blush fashion show held at Mai. Let me begin by saying that this was just an all-around disastrous night for me and (for the most part) not a reflection of the darling Blush Boutique.

I had previously blogged about the event, linking my fabulous readers to the Facebook invite where they could read more about the fashion show and RSVP. We’ll return to this later… So, the event starts at 10:00; I think I arrived to the 12th Street location around 10:10. This is the first time I’ve ever been “late” for a fashion show, but as we all know, fashion shows never start on time. It took my friend and I a good ten minutes to find parking, which only attests to how many guests were attending the show, and eventually followed a stream of cars into a parking lot two blocks away.

After trekking on a near-sheet of ice the two blocks in suede heels, we had to wait in line at Mai for another ten minutes. And if you were outside for more than a minute, you know how cold it was that night! After finally getting into the club, I told the lady at the door we were there for the Blush fashion show and as indicated on the Touch of Blush Facebook invite, if you mentioned you were with Blush you would receive free admission. Apparently, nobody had told her. She apologized, but told me my friend and I would have to pay a $10 admission each to get in. We argued with her for several minutes, and although I adamantly insisted we were to get in free, she replied, “I’m sorry. Nobody told me that.” Seriously? Seriously!?! By this time, I could see the fashion show going on, so I forked over the “admission” for my friend and I.
Models were parading down the runway as we made our way through the crowd; we eventually found a spot to stand, surprisingly, next to the runway. Six models later, the show was done.

So, yeah, I paid $20 to see six models walk the runway. Not happy. And yes, I should have arrived on time, but this is the first fashion event I’ve ever been to that actually did start when they said it would. You gotta give credit to Blush for being punctual- I’ll know better next time. With that being said, I did see pictures from the night and fell in lust with an adorable leopard print dress that would be a great piece for day (throw on a black sweater for work) and night (take the sweater off and grab some drinks with your girls!). I’m pretty sure I’m going to purchase that dress immediately.

My friend and I stayed at Mai for another twenty minutes or so. While I considered making my way upstairs for the Blush after party, I wasn’t really in a socializing mood by this point. After we left the show, I thought it odd that so many people had cleared out after the show, noting the near-empty parking lot. Nope. People weren’t leaving, people were being towed. Sure, this was totally our fault for following a stream of cars into a parking lot without reading the tiny sign saying it was permit-only, but that didn’t make us feel better when the tow-truck driver refused to release our car until we paid him $85. We ended up having to ride along with the driver and his cockerpoodlelabradoodlewhatever to a gas station to reach an ATM. $115 for a night I thought would be free?! So yeah, not really the night I had anticipated!

Like I said, the disastrous happenings of this night were partly brought on by myself and sheer bad luck, but I’m still disappointed I had to pay for a fashion show that was so obviously free. It’s imperative that when putting on any type of event, fashion show, party, concert, whatever, that all involved parties are aware of the details, especially admission costs. While this incident may have been singular, nonetheless, it can make involved parties look unorganized or misleading. Communication is key!
The rest of my weekend was very unfashionable and filled with no sleep and too much work; I’m just now contemplating removing the Visine from my purse.
Until the next event…

Livia Firth Rocks Prophetik at the Golden Globes

Congratulations to Jeff Garner of Prophetik, whose eco-friendly design was worn by Italian film producer and wife of Colin Firth, Livia Firth at the latest Golden Globe Awards. It makes my heart proud to see a Tennessee-based designer’s work being showcased on the Red Carpet! Firth was taking part in the ‘Green Carpet Challenge’, an initiative to incorporate eco-friendly/sustainable pieces into her wardrobe.

Exclusive preparation photos:

Livia getting her makeup done.

Jeff from Prophetik helping Livia get ready.

Love this shot of Livia, Colin, and Jeff!!

Livia rocking the eco-friendly Prophetik look on the Red Carpet...

I love the silhouette and beautiful draping.

How sweet is he?!

I actually had a student intern for Prophetik for several months, and reading her internship journal was a true delight. I loved hearing about the tasks she accomplished, and how the team really integrated her into the company for optimal learning experiences. I’m so glad she had the opportunity to work with such a well-known and greatly respected company.
Here is a little information about the Prophetik design philosophy as detailed on the company’s website:

“My desire is to not just get people to come to a Charity event or go on a missions or service trip but to be truly engaged with self allowing the heart of giving and serving to lead one in life rather than being another event or feel good moment but a constant, not based on condition. Understanding the heart: When you understand, you cannot help but love. You cannot get angry. To develop understanding, you have to practice looking at all living beings with the eyes of compassion. When you understand, you cannot help but love. And when you love, you naturally act in a way that an relieve the suffering of people.

The Sustainable Journey: A meaningful analysis and evaluation of any product’s relationship to the environment must include a broad array of criteria including low-impact production, low-impact maintenance, and its classification as recyclable, reusable or incineratable. Primary considerations are low impact on plant and animal life, conservation of limited resources, and waste minimization….Jeff Garner

Looks from the latest Prophetik runway show:

Here is the press release on Firth and Prophetik:

FOR IMMEDIATE ATTENTION:
LIVIA FIRTH WEARS PROPHETIK BY JEFF GARNER TO THE GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS AS PART OF THE 'GREEN CARPET CHALLENGE'
January 16, 2011: Livia Firth wore a Prophetik by Jeff Garner gown as part of the 'Green Carpet Challenge' to the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards on January 16, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. Livia Firth chose a beautiful strapless gown made from Tussah silk and hemp that was dyed with Garner's own indigo plant.
Livia Firth worked directly with Jeff Garner, whose Prophetik label is admired internationally for both its values and its sartorial elegance. ‘When I went to the Prophetik catwalk at London Fashion Week last September with Laura Bailey (model and fellow eco queen), we both loved the romance of Jeff Garner’s gowns. There is nothing granola or worthy about the way they look,’ Firth says.
Livia also appreciates the way Garner is able to approach ‘problems in the fashion chain, such as the heavy chemical pollution associated with dying, and come up with a considered response. His understanding of ecologically intelligent fabrics and processes is extraordinary, as is his respect for the natural world.’
Since the Tennessee based line Prophetik launched eight years ago, designer Jeff Garner has been a romantic visual artist, pioneer, and unconventional designer. His sustainable, organic label Prophetik is on a path of transformation, leading the evolution of fashion and changing our perception of luxury. Jeff Garner was recently named "2010 Eco Men's Designer of the Year" during London Fashion week.
