Fashion Team Goes Shopping!
Beckley Team: Nick Verreos, Lawrence Zarian and Jen Rade, TV Guide Network "The Fashion Team" at Beckley Boutique

Last week for our latest episode of TV Guide Network's "The Fashion Team", host Lawrence Zarian & Co. --by Company, of course, I mean stylist Jen Rade and I, Nick Verreos-- headed to the hip Beckley Boutique on Melrose Avenue in the heart of West Hollywood.

Since this season "The Fashion Team" was exclusively on location, shooting in all sorts of places in LA, this time we came to Beckley. This chic gem of a boutique carries brands and designers such as Camilla and Marc, Halston Heritage, Sass and Bide and Vivienne Westwood among others. They also carry a HUGE array of accessories including purses, jewelry and even luxe fragranced candles and body lotions.

For our "WTF?"/ What's The Fashion segment, Lawrence , Jen and I discussed our "Most Memorable" red carpet styles from last week's Grammy Awards and then chose our Top Five. We had a BLAST discussing Lady Gaga's "Egg" , Nicki Minaj's Cheetah-Krazy Givenchy Haute Couture (LOVED IT!!!) plus many more.

Academy Awards Couture Special...on TV Guide Network!!!

Grace Kelly at the 27Th Academy Awards in 1955 wearing Edith Head aquamarine duchesse satin gown

In anticipation of Hollywood's biggest night, TV Guide Network will celebrate the Academy Awards by looking back at the legendary fashions worn by film stars from the 1950s to today.

Nick Verreos joins TV Guide Network's "Academy Awards: Iconic Stars, Legendary Fashions" TV Special

I was invited to join an illustrious panel of experts, including the AMAZING and legendary Bob Mackie, to speak on Oscars Fashions for TV Guide's very special program: Academy Awards: Iconic Stars, Legendary Fashions.

Bob Mackie

This special TV program will be a special insight on Oscars Fashion through the years--and through the eyes of Fashion Designers (like myself and Bob Mackie), hair experts, fashion editors and stylists. The one-hour special will also highlight classic style icons Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly and modern day trend-setters Nicole Kidman and Angelina Jolie.

Halle Berry at the 74th Annual Academy Awards

You know we'll talk about the gorgeous Halle Berry in that Elie Saab gown (No one had heard of this Lebanese Designer until then! Well, no one outside of the LA-NY-Paris-Beirut Fashionista circles!).

And of course, the photo of Cher and THAT iconic Bob Mackie creation might make a "special appearance" in the show. If you LOVE Fashion, are a fan of the Red Carpet and the Academy Awards...well, this is THE SHOW for you!

As you know, last weekend was the Gala VIP Opening Night Party of the 19Th Annual "Art of Motion Picture Costume Design" Exhibition at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising/FIDM Museum & Galleries. The Exhibit is OPEN to the public (it opened this last week) and in case you didn't get the "memo": It's FREE!!! On Opening Night, I did a great interview with one of my favorite LA Radio Personalities, the affable Frances Anderton of KCRW's "DnA" show.

Los AngelesTimes: Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising "Art of Motion Picture Costume Design" Exhibit Mention!

LA Times Love!

Academy Award-Nominated Costume Designers Colleen Atwood ("Alice In Wonderland"), Mary Zophres ("True Grit") and Nick Verreos, FIDM "Art of Motion Picture Costume Design" Exhibition photo courtesy of Alex J. Berliner/ABImages

Yesterday--on my Birthday no less!!! I opened up my Los Angeles Times--the BIG Sunday Edition--and there was a FABULOUS article--written by Ellen Oliver--about the opening of the 19Th Annual "Art of Motion Picture Costume Design" Exhibition at my Alma Mater (and College I am an Instructor and Spokesperson at) the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising/FIDM.

And the best part (well, not the best part but it was nice!): It included a wonderful photo of myself, and the Academy Award Nominated Costume Designers, Colleen Atwood (for "Alice In Wonderland"), and Mary Zophres ("True Grit") as well as a short & sweet quote. It was a bit of a shock and (nice) surprise to be having my coffee and scrambled eggs---and then all of a sudden see the photo! Thanks LA Times and by the way, it begs repeating: Wonderful article!

Below is the Los Angeles Times Sunday Edition Article, published yesterday:

Scene & Heard: Costume designers in the spotlight

At the preview of "The Art of Motion Picture Costume Design," two-time Academy Award-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood said
Johnny Depp wanted his Mad Hatter costume to capture the flavor of a mood ring. So she layered his topcoat with multiple colors of silk.

Standing beside his costume from "Alice in Wonderland," Atwood said the challenges of designing for Depp, Anne Hathaway, Mia Wasikowska and Helena Bonham Carter included the changing sizes of the characters. "Alice shrinks and grows, and Helena's big head made her neck look as thick as a thigh," Atwood said, adding that she solved that problem by creating a collar to narrow the appearance of Bonham Carter's neck.

An estimated 1,400 guests, mainly members of the Costume Designers Guild, turned up on Feb. 5 to view more than 100 costumes from 21 films at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising's museum (www.fidmmuseum.org) in Los Angeles. Four of the five nominees for this year's Academy Award for costume design were represented: "Alice in Wonderland," "True Grit," "The Tempest" and "The King's Speech." (The fifth film is "I Am Love.")

"In the best pictures, the costumes are subtle," said Nick Verreos, an FIDM instructor and "Project Runway" personality. "The goal of costume design is to create real people, but when it's a fantastic movie like 'Alice,' the costumes have to be fantastic."

Nick Verreos Films TV Guide "The Fashion Team" Episode at Sielian's Vintage Apparel Boutique!!!

Chanel, Valentino, Mugler...and Nick, Jen and Lawrence????

Vintage TV Guide Threesome: Lawrence Zarian, Nick Verreos and Jen Rade at Sielian's Vintage Apparel Boutique, filming "The Fashion Team"

Last week, I shot my "What's The Fashion?" segment for TV Guide Network's "The Fashion Team" weekly TV Show at one of the most incredible Vintage Couture Boutiques in all of LA: Sielian's Vintage Apparel. Sielian's Boutique is truly a GEM of a store! Located on Melrose Avenue, near Doheny, it is THE Go-To place for all the top stylists in Hollywood--from Rachel Zoe to my lovely--and very stylist TV Guide Fashion Team "girlfriend", Jen Rade.

Sequined Fantasy: Costume Designer and Stylist Jen Rade holds up one of the many Vintage Gems from Sielian's Vintage Apparel Boutique

Sielian's Vintage
DIVA is Sielian Lie herself! And here's the best part: She was one of my STUDENTS many years ago at the Fashion Institute of Design &Merchandising/FIDM! Yes, I taught her! Sielian had a passion for Vintage Couture and the short story is:

Instructor...FABULOUS Student: Nick Verreos and Sielian Lie at her store, Sielian's Vintage Apparel

She began selling what she had at the famous Fairfax High School Melrose Trading Post and A-List Celebs like Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen began buying...and telling her that she should own a shop. After some time, her and her wonderful business partner husband eventually did, at this fabulous West Hollywood/Beverly Hills-adjacent location and well, the rest is LA Vintage Couture/Red Carpet Stylist History!

Jean-Louis Scherrer

Her store is Vintage Couture Heaven! Sielian has an amazing editing eye and shops from Paris to Pasadena--scouring the best in Vintage Fashion. While I was there , preparing to film my segment, I saw (amongst other things) a Jean-Louis Scherrer original, as well as...

A Valentino hounds-tooth black-and-white puffed-sleeved cropped jacket

A prized Thierry Mugler leather color-blocked jacket (I heard singer Rihanna might have been looking at this!)

Lots of Chanel necklaces (Gosh I wish I was a girl with money...or a Sugar Daddy!!!)

As well as Chanel and Hermes purses. All Vintage from the 80's, 90's and prior. And all ready for a DIVA--from Beverly Hills or Dubai...to do some "Vintage Retail Damage".

Window Couture: Sielian's Vintage Apparel Boutique, Melrose Avenue West Hollywood

The shop is located on 9013 Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood and it is A MUST for any lover of Vintage Couture! Thank you Sielian--and your wonderful husband--for having us in your FABULOUS Boutique! And thank you for enrolling in my class years ago at FIDM and being a straight-A student!

The episode debuted last Friday but you can still catch it at these dates and times: Wednesday Feb 9 1PM Friday Feb 11 7PM Saturday Feb 12 2PM

Happy New Year...Happy New Website..and Facebook Page!!!

Hope everyone had a safe, relaxing and utterly fabulous New Year's!!! To start off 2011 just right--I decided--along with my NIKOLAKI design partner-in-crime David Paul--to "revamp" our NIKOLAKI Website, and add the fresh-off-the-fashion-presses photos from...

Our new Spring 2011 Look Book, shot by the amazing photographer, Evans Vestal Ward.

Lauren Gish, and shot it all at The Focus Studio, the only daylight photo studio at a California Beach (Venice Beach in case you are wondering). It is home to many a fashion editorial--from Replay Denim Catalog Shoots to Details Magazine covers to a Janet Jackson CD cover. Faces: Iconic Portraits of Los Angeles Fashion--Nick Verreos makes a "brief" photo Cameo!!!

Fashionable FACES...
Casual Fridays Posing: Nick Verreos prepares for his "Faces: Iconic Portraits of LA Fashion" close-up

Late last year, I was asked to partake in this wonderful opportunity to be photographed for the Faces: Iconic Portraits of Los Angeles Fashion, an ongoing series of books with portraits capturing some of the fascinating people who work for or on behalf of the Los Angeles fashion industry. The entire idea was produced, edited and directed by John Arguelles, President at Lloyd Klein Couture, and a man with an inspiring vision and an unstoppable love of LA and it's Fashion.

James Galanos

"Volume 1" of the book--due out next month--will feature over 150 of these people--a wide range of 'subjects", from Retailers, Editors, Factors, Stylists, Models, and of course, Designers. It is dedicated to James Galanos, our very own Master COUTURIER and was photographed by Steve Anderson. The first video of the portraits is up and features LA fashionistas from my very good friend, California Apparel News Editor-in-Chief Alison Nieder, to Fashion Historian Sylvia Sheppard to LA Times Fashion Critic Booth Moore to designers Randolph Duke, Sue Wong and myself.
Sue Wong

For the shoot, John asked me to just show up--and I did after dealing with back-to-back pattern-making, draping and design meetings--When I saw how FABULOUS and made-up Miss Sue Wong looked (ALWAYS a DIVA--take a look a the video below!), I now wish I would have at least put on a jacket, a dress shirt and a tie!!!!

Click Below for Part One--I make a brief "appearance" around 7:16:

Holiday Party Round Up: The TV Guide Network Party at Lucky Strikes Lanes/Lounge at Hollywood & Highland

Bowling FASHION Pins, Onion Rings, Holiday Cocktails, and a beautiful Hollywood & Highland Xmas Tree...

Editor Sandwich : Nick Verreos and two TV Guide's "The Fashion Team" editors

Last week, I was invited to yet, another Holiday Bash: This time it was the TV Guide Network Holiday Party, which was being held at Lucky Strikes Lanes/Lounge at Hollywood & Highland. Fresh off my "Most Memorable Red Carpet Fashion Moments of 2010" segment which I filmed at the W Hotel Los Angeles with stylist Jen Rade and host Lawrence Zarian--in ICE SKATES!!!---

I braved the torrential LA rains (those three words do not belong in a sentence!) and went to the party! I wanted to say "Heeeyyy" to all my wonderful co-workers and the amazing TV Guide people who make me look good (or at least try!) and maybe get some "Holiday" cocktails and nibblings...

Lucky Strike Lanes/Lounge, Hollywood & Highland Complex

Once I arrived at Lucky Strike Lanes/Lounge, the party was in full swing with hundreds of TV Guide-ers drinking, bowling (I know, seriously!?) and partaking in the delicious food that was out. I spotted salads, desserts and even some onion rings (my favorite!). Unfortunately, there were too many prying eyes and I didn't want to show that GAYS actually EAT (so I didn't--but trust me, you KNOW I wanted to ask for a "To-Go" bag!).

Bowling (NOT!) Buddies: Nick Verreos and Michael Anthony Nalepa, TV Guide Holiday Party Lucky Strikes

I didn't see my fellow "The Fashion Team" cohorts--Miss Jen Rade and Lawrence Zarian (I heard I had just missed him!), and I didn't see Chris Harrison (Host of "The Bachelor" and the TV Guide Red Carpet Awards Pre-Shows), but...I did get to hang out with a lot of the behind-the-scenes kids: I said "Hola" to several of my producers (LOVE them!), segment directors, cameramen, sound guys and editors (REALLY LOVE THEM!).

Not that $11 Million Tree: The gorgeously lit Hollywood & Highland Christmas Tree

I had a really fun time, and in case y'all were wondering, NO, I did not bowl. I just mingled. It's more fashionable...Happy Holidays, be safe, be merry and always be FASHIONABLE...and take onion rings TO GO!!!!!
